LSS Riverside Virtual Walk to Fight Poverty

October 17, 2020 - October 18, 2020

Why We Walk

Christine went with a friend to Lutheran Social Services in Riverside to get lunch, and before long offered to be a volunteer in our donated clothing department. That was her way of giving back. There was a culture of hope and acceptance at our pantry, and that’s exactly what Christine needed most.

The oldest of three children, she grew up with her mother and stepfather, both of whom did drugs from as early as she can remember. The family never had a real home, moving from motel to motel. Sometimes her mom begged at the street corner. On a regular basis her parents locked the door to their room and did drugs.

Christine dropped out of high school at 15 and started using, and selling drugs, even to her parents. She misused her pain medications, stole from stores to support her habit, and was buzzed all the time. She was in and out of jail, and for almost a year advertised online as an escort. That should have been the end for her, but God had a different plan.

Her chance encounter with the warm and caring staff at LSS Riverside helped changed her life…permanently. Christine has been sober for over three years and has a sense of direction and purpose for her life. She currently works two jobs and is enrolled at Riverside Community College in an Associate’s Degree program in Social Work and Human Services.

“For the first time in my life, I am focused on my future instead of simply repeating my past.” says Christine. “It’s not easy, and not every day is filled with happiness but, now I live with a sense of joy that my life is finally going somewhere. There are possibilities waiting for me I had not even considered just a few years ago. Thank you.”

This is the difference your support makes. This year our Walk to Fight Poverty goes virtual! Participants are invited to “choose their own walk”, whether socially distanced with friends or around the block with family. No matter your route, each step you take offers the invaluable gift of Peace to a family or individual in need. Won’t you join us? Start your page or support an existing team member today!

Let’s Get Active!

Just because our walk is taking place virtually, doesn’t mean you can’t get your steps in! In previous years, our walk route totaled 4 miles, but this year you can set your own distance. We encourage all participants to walk a total of at least 2 miles. Start whenever you’re ready!

How do you make a donation?

The easiest way is to donate online at https://lssriverside-walk-to-fight-poverty.everydayhero.do/ – donations can be made securely to a participant’s personal fundraising page with a credit card. Cash and checks may also be collected. Any donations by cash or check should be delivered to the LSS Riverside office between 10 am and 2 pm Monday-Friday. That office is located at 4162 Rubidoux Avenue, Riverside CA 92506. All checks should be made payable to “Lutheran Social Services of Southern California” or “LSSSC”.

Is there a fundraising minimum?

No, and there’s no maximum either! We encourage every participant to make a difference by asking friends and family for donations and making a personal donation. Share the link to your personal donation page on Facebook and other social media.

What happens after I walk?

Join us online for a celebration of our fundraising efforts on Sunday, October 18, at 1:00 pm. The information on how to participate in that Zoom meeting will be sent to all registered walk participants.

Can I fundraise after the walk day?

Of course! Who are we to stop you from achieving fundraising fame? Your fundraising page will stay open until October 31. You can also continue to submit cash donations and checks to the LSS Riverside office.

Help us be there for others today and tomorrow. We need you to help us continue to play a critical role in the COVID-19 relief efforts. Every dollar counts! Let’s get walking!

  2. 2 – Host or invite and bring 10-15 guests to one Fostering Community Care event within 3 months of your attending one yourself.

  4. 4 – Ambassadors will complete their commitment after bringing 10-15 persons within the 3 month time period. An Ambassador has the option to complete after one term, continue for another 3 month term or move into another role on the team.
